Friday, January 28, 2005. 13:00. The first doses of light have been captured. It has been rolled and packed. The document will travel with us and be completed in Quanzhou.

Arrival in Quanzhou
2005The day after arriving in Quanzhou, we begin set-up for the exhibition at the Qidian Art Center. It is the first contemporary art exhibition in this city of 7 million and the people from the gallery have welcomed us, helping us find materials and resources.

On the day of the opening, we enter the tent at 11:00 and though we plan to be in there until 19:00, we shorten our exposure time due to the bright day. We come out of the tent at 16:30, to dramatic cinema music (Janni Live at the Acropolis). I fear that our exit is anti-climatic for the large expectant crowd pointing at least 10 cameras.

2005Counting down outside is Paul. Zero passes as we are still undoing the light-tight tape sealing our world from the crowdy courtyard where we'd decided to put up our tent. The outside washes in. As we crawl out into a sea of faces and lenses, we miss the gaze of the wondered. Do they understand that we return in their backyard?
